Each season, Basket Europe publishes his traditional report on the salaries of the French championship. Like last year, the 2022-2023 Betclic Elite’s season broke many records. Unthinkable a few years ago : several players are over the million !
Basket Europe reveals the salaries of the French championship, team by team, players and coaches included, day by day and in alphabetical order. It is a rigorous investigation carried out thanks to the help of several sources, among which numerous agents and a great majority of club representatives, which allow us to lift the veil on these figures. They are not official – we are neither the NBA nor the NBL -, and they include a margin of error of + or – 10%.
We do not count benefits in kind, such as housing and vehicles. All clubs offer these to foreign players (non-JFL). It appears that this rule applies to local players (JFL), as far as housing is concerned, with the exception of Le Mans and Dijon, and for some as far as cars are concerned. This is not insignificant, since housing usually costs 10-15,000 euros annually for a club, and a car 5,000 euros.
Salaries are given in euros (net) and are annual. When this is not the case, we specify it. For American players paid in dollars, the conversion to euros depends on the fluctuation of the exchange rate – the two currencies have never been so close since last summer, when the majority of contracts were signed. We accompany our figures with a comment on the strategy of the clubs, but you can of course see for yourself the relevance of these choices.
Monaco, ASVEL and the rest
After revealing the 18 top teams, we will also publish our study on the biggest salaries in the league, the good and bad deals of the beginning of the season and our comparison of the technicians’ salaries.
Without saying more, we can already tell you that this year is historic in many ways. Not only did Mike James break his own record as the highest paid player in history for a season, but he also served as the driving force behind the rest of the championship, driven by Monaco and ASVEL. Before the 2009-2010 season, no one had ever exceeded 500,000 euros. Today, there are more than ten players to exceed this mark, including several millionaires !
As every year, this work is exclusively reserved for our subscribers. There’s still time to be part of this privileged circle that grows every year for less than a euro a week, so subscribe!
